Shield of Sisters: Empowering Female Veterans and Ending Military Sexual Trauma
As a military spouse, the significance of the armed forces runs deep in my life. Ryan is a veteran, and witnessing his dedication and sacrifices has instilled in me a profound respect for those who serve. However, amidst the camaraderie of the military, there exists a pressing issue that cannot be ignored: the prevalence of military sexual trauma among female service members. As a female, this issue is also close to my heart and I’m sure it’s close to yours too. Shield of Sisters is an organization that is ready to help.
Need for Change
The statistics are alarming and demand urgent attention. In 2022 alone, over 36,000 female service members reported some form of sexual assault. These numbers, however, only scratch the surface, as many cases go unreported due to fear of retaliation and stigma within the military hierarchy.
Shield of Sisters stands as a beacon of hope and support for our sister service members who have endured the weight of military sexual trauma. Our mission is clear: to end sexual assault within the ranks of our armed services and to provide a path to restoration for those who have suffered its devastating effects.
For too long, the culture of silence and stigma surrounding sexual trauma in the military has prevented survivors from speaking out and seeking help. The fear of retaliation, victim-blaming, and lack of support from military leadership have perpetuated a cycle of suffering and silence. It is imperative that we break this cycle and create a culture of accountability, transparency, and support within our armed services.
That’s where Shield of Sisters comes in.
The Mission of Shield of Sisters
Shield of Sisters is on a mission to empower female veterans and end the scourge of military sexual trauma.
While military officials grapple with finding solutions, Shield of Sisters stands resolute in a commitment to effecting change.
Restoration Retreats
At Shield of Sisters, they understand that healing from MST requires more than just medical treatment—it requires a holistic approach that addresses the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of survivors. That’s why they offer transformative restoration retreats designed to provide survivors with the tools, resources, and support they need to heal and thrive.
Led by what they call their dedicated Battle Angels, who have overcome similar challenges, these retreats offer peer support, guidance, and understanding throughout the journey towards recovery.
The Battle Angels Network extends the support beyond the retreats, providing ongoing assistance and companionship to participants.
Their Battle Angels Network is a vital component of the support system put in place by Shield of Sisters, providing survivors with ongoing companionship, guidance, and encouragement.
These angels, who have walked the same path of healing, offer a listening ear, referrals to resources and counseling, and regular check-ins to ensure no one feels alone in their journey.
