As a blogger, content creator, and small business owner, building an email list is one of the most critical components of your marketing strategy. Your email list is the foundation of your audience and can be the driving force behind your business growth. A strong email list means more opportunities to connect with your audience, promote your products, and increase sales.

how to build an email list

When I first started my blog, American Woman, I had zero email subscribers. I knew that building an email list was critical to growing my audience and business, so I focused on creating valuable lead magnets and optimizing my website for email collection.

I created Canva templates and email templates that were specifically designed for my target audience. These templates were a valuable resource that my audience couldn’t find anywhere else, which made them an excellent lead magnet. I promoted these templates on my website and social media channels and saw a steady increase in my email subscribers.

In this post, I’m going to share with you 10 proven strategies that helped me build my email list from scratch and grow my audience. These strategies worked for me, and they can work for you too.

Create Valuable Lead Magnets

The first strategy that helped me build my email list was creating valuable lead magnets. Lead magnets are free incentives that you offer to your audience in exchange for their email address. Your lead magnet should offer value to your audience and be relevant to your niche. Some examples of lead magnets include eBooks, checklists, templates, and exclusive content.

In my case, I created free Canva templates and email templates that were designed specifically for my target audience. These templates were beautifully designed and highly relevant to my niche, which made them a valuable resource for my audience. By offering these templates as a lead magnet, I was able to capture the attention of my audience and encourage them to sign up for my email list.

Once my audience enters my email list they become part of a “work flow” for me to continue sending them resources to!

For example, I use automations when someone new signs up for my newsletter. Automation works by immediately sending the new subscriber a welcome email. You can also create a “workflow” so that once someone signs up, they get an email immediately, then one 2 days later, then one a week later, etc.

Optimize Your Website for Email Collection

The second strategy that helped me build my email list was optimizing my website for email collection. Your website should have an email collection form in a visible location on your homepage. Use eye-catching graphics and clear, concise copy to encourage your visitors to sign up for your email list. Additionally, consider using a pop-up or slide-in form to grab your visitors’ attention.

Use Social Media to Drive Traffic to Your Email Sign-up Page

Social media is a powerful tool to drive traffic to your email sign-up page. Promote your lead magnets on social media and include a link to your sign-up page in your bio. Additionally, use paid social media ads to reach a larger audience.

Host a Webinar or Live Event

Hosting a webinar or live event is an excellent way to engage with your audience and build your email list. Offer a free registration to your event in exchange for their email address.

Use Gated Content

Gated content is content that can only be accessed by providing an email address. This could be a free resource, such as an eBook or whitepaper, or even exclusive access to your content library.

Run a Giveaway

Running a giveaway is an excellent way to incentivize your audience to join your email list. Offer a valuable prize, such as a product or service, and require participants to enter their email address to enter the contest.

Use Referral Marketing

Referral marketing is a great way to build your email list by leveraging your existing audience. Encourage your subscribers to refer their friends and family to join your email list and offer a reward for each referral.

Use Quizzes

Quizzes are a fun and engaging way to collect email addresses. Create a quiz relevant to your niche and require participants to enter their email address to receive their results.

Use a Call-to-Action (CTA) in Your Blog Posts

Use a CTA in your blog posts to encourage your readers to join your email list. Offer a free resource related to your post topic in exchange for their email address.

Use Exit-Intent Pop-Ups

Exit-intent pop-ups are a type of pop-up that appears when a visitor is about to leave your website. Use an exit-intent pop-up to offer a lead magnet or incentive to encourage visitors to sign up for your email list.

As my email list grew, I continued to use these strategies and added new ones, such as running giveaways and hosting webinars. I also used referral marketing to encourage my subscribers to refer their friends and family to join my email list.

The result of using these strategies was a steady increase in my email subscribers. Today, my email list has grown to over 10,000 subscribers, and it continues to grow every day. My email list has become a critical component of my marketing strategy, and it has been instrumental in growing my blog and business.

In conclusion, building an email list is a critical component of your marketing strategy as a blogger, content creator, or small business owner. By using these 10 proven strategies, you can build a strong email list and grow your audience. Remember to create valuable lead magnets, optimize your website for email collection, use social media to drive traffic, and engage with your audience through webinars and live events. With time and effort, you too can grow your email list and build a loyal following of engaged readers.
