How to Get to the Hollywood Sign: Best Viewing Spots

The Hollywood Sign – an iconic landmark that has captured the imagination of people worldwide since its debut on the Santa Monica Mountains in 1923. Originally spelling out “Hollywoodland,” the sign’s allure has transcended its initial purpose of enticing property buyers and has become a symbol of the entertainment industry and a global tourist attraction.

How to Get to the Hollywood Sign: Best Viewing Spots

For the easiest Hollywood sign hike, head to Lake Hollywood Park. This is the hike that Ryan and I took; it’s about 3 miles and took about an hour all together. Start at Lake Hollywood Park – offering tons of free parking and an unobstructed view of the sign from right in the park, this dog-friendly park is a favorite among tourists. A short stroll up the hill offers an alternative, closer view of the sign, making it a must-visit spot. Visit during early mornings for a quieter experience; weekends may see more visitors.

The start point for this hike is Lake Hollywood Park, and the address you need whether driving yourself or taking an Uber/Lyft is 3160 Canyon Lake Drive. There is a small parking lot, and plenty of free street parking along Canyon Lake Drive next to the park itself, and I had no problem getting a parking right away. Note: you cannot park in the areas where the curb is painted red and do not drive uphill any further to try and park closer to the sign. This hike will take you through residential areas, and the residents aren’t the biggest fans of tourists! So make sure you only park where it’s allowed.

Lake Hollywood Park: The Best View of The Hollywood Sign

One of the best ways to photograph the Hollywood Sign up close and to reach the top of Mount Lee is to go to Lake Hollywood Park and then walk along two residential streets that climb up to the hills.

First, get to Lake Hollywood Park, where you can already start taking some nice pictures of the Hollywood Sign from right inside the park.

After taking all of your photos of the Hollywood Sign from this spot, start walking up the road to the right of the park. You will also get an incredible view of the city during this walk.

Deronda Dr. In Lake Hollywood Park

Your goal will be to reach the end of Deronda Dr. To get there, you will have two options: The first route (which I recommend) is also the easiest and consists of walking along Mulholland Dr. Do not be intimidated when it becomes a dirt road that seems to lead to nowhere. Eventually, you will reach the gate that you see in this photo. To the left of the gate, you will find a walkway that will take you to the clearing marked on the map, and from there you can turn onto Mount Lee Dr, which will take you behind the Hollywood Sign if you want to hike an additional 50 minutes.
